Elder Advisors

Our Research and Training Institute includes two committees of elder advisors that provide advice and direction to the Tłı̨chǫ Government and the delivery of our programs and services.

One Committee is called the Healing Wind Advisory Committee and the other group is called the Tłı̨chǫ Odaɂa Advisory Council. Each operates with different members and authorities.

Joe Erasmus
Advisory Committee Member
Joe is a member of the Healing Wind Advisory Group, where he provides elder oversight and direction to the development and delivery of Tłįchǫ Government social programs and services. Joe has made significant contributions to his community related to addictions and wellness having been a school counsellor for many years and very involved in his community from working with the Friendship Centre, the Justice Committee and the Parish Council.

Jimmy B. Rabesca
Advisory Council Member
Jimmy B. is a member of the Tłįchǫ Odaɂa Advisory Council, where he provides elder skills and knowledge, and provide guidance.  Jimmy B. has provided advice and guidance to the Tłįchǫ Government for many years as one of a group of elders actively involved in advising the negotiators of  the Tłįchǫ Agreement. Over many years, he has made significant contributions to the Tłįchǫ First Nation ensuring that the knowledge of Tłįchǫ elders has shaped the development of the school system (Strong Like Two People, 1990)  to the  development of the Tłįchǫ Constitution (2000). 
Jimmy Kodzin

Joe Black
Advisory Council Member
Joseph (Joe) Black, was appointed to the Tłı̨chǫ Odaɂa Advisory Council in 2013.  He is 81 years old.  He was born on the land, and he lives in Gamètì. 
Joe M. Mantla
Advisory Council Member
Joe Mantla or Cowboy Joe as he is widely  known, to differentiate him from at least 4 other Joe Mantlas,  was appointed to the Tłįchǫ Odaɂa Advisory Council in 2013.  He is 68 years old and with his wife Mary Rose, has raised  4 children in Behchokǫ̀. He is originally from Marion village where he was born and raised.  Joe went to residential school for only two years so most of his life has been spent learning on the land, hunting, trapping and fishing.  Joe began working as a Cultural Program On-the-Land Instructor in the Chief Jimmy Bruneau School in 1995, and since then he has been involved in many cultural trips and activities with all ages of students. Joe has been particularly active on the Trails of our Ancestors summer canoe trips and on the orientation trips to the Barrenlands. Joe has many wonderful skills that he is able to teach students as well as a vast collection of histories and stories that he has heard over the years.
Mary Adele Rabesca

Mary Adele is a member of the Healing Wind Advisory Council, where she provides elder oversight and direction to the development and delivery of Tłı̨chǫ Government social programs and services. Mary Adele has been active in the research life of the Tłı̨chǫ communities for decades. Her publications include as a member of a community based research team with Dr. Joan Ryan, Traditional Dene Justice (1993)  and Traditional Dene Medicine (1994) to most recently CART productions and activities this past year such as  the “Breaking the Silence” video on violence in homes and the Ts’e Whıı Ts’e Daa (Rites of Passage) program.
Noel Drybones

Pierre Beaverho
Advisory Council Member
Pierre Beaverho was appointed to the Tłįchǫ Odaɂa Advisory Council, where he shares his own life experiences on the land with wisdom and knowledge with the Tłįchǫ Chiefs and the Tłįchǫ Assembly.  Pierre lives in Whatì  although he is originally from Behchokǫ̀. He is now a widower and with his wife has raised  12 children.  Pierre has worked on various jobs over  the years. He has always been an active supporter of the education of youth working on many cultural projects including most recently the Trails of our Ancestors summer projects. Pierre’s passion is to have the Tłįchǫ government work well together and he supports the Assembly through his spiritual beliefs and providing prayers, and feeding of the fire ceremonies. He wants people to be unified as one.  Pierre’s education comes from the land, not from residential school. Pierre loves to laugh and joke. He is also a good story teller.
